Before we find out if you are a leader or a follower, let's ask ourselves what it really means to be a leader? What makes one person a leader and another person a follower?

There are a number of characteristics that you need if you want to be at the top. Everyone has different ideas about what those characteristics are and I am no different. Here is my list, take it or leave it.

1. You have to be a visionary. Where there is no vision, the people will perish. Helen Keller once said, "I would rather have vision with no sight than have sight with no vision." Can you think big enough and have enough passion that you can actually cast your vision onto others in such a way that they will listen? You must be a good communicator of your vision while maintaining the fact that your vision in life will change.

All of us, at some point in our lives, wanted to 'grow up and be' something, and more than likely, that vision changed as you got older. When I was young I wanted to be a magician. I had lots of tricks up my sleeve, so to speak, and I loved it. The amazement that I could get from a crowd was priceless. I even performed at my girlfriend's (now wife's) sweet sixteen party. It was fun, but it changed. Now I am an entrepreneur and I couldn't be happier. You have to be able to command your followers in such a way that they will take your word for gold. Before you can be a leader, you must have vision.

2. You have to believe in the 'Pain of Discipline vs. Pain of Regret'. I live my life by this philosophy. I would rather use discipline and get done what needs to be done than feel the pain of regret when I look back on what could have been. I never want to sing my shoulda, coulda, woulda's. This all comes down to the fact that you must master yourself. Time management and personal priority setting are key.

If you can't manage time, what makes you think you can manage anything? Your short-term tasks, multiplied by time, equal your long-term accomplishments. What do you want your accomplishments to be? That brings us to number 3.

3. You have to be an extreme goal setter. Setting goals is a whole other topic. As a matter of fact, it could be at least a 3-part article (and it will, be looking for it soon). How do you set goals? Do you even set goals? How would you help others set goals? A goal is written, specific, timed, measurable, tangible and realistic. It also has to have a plan and a price you are willing to pay to achieve it. Just start with that and see where you get.

4. You have to be dissatisfied. Can you make something better? Can you teach something in a different way so that people learn easier? Are you willing to take on the role of another leader? If you are dissatisfied with something, you already have the ability to make it better, just do it!

5. I believe it also boils down to magnetism. People are attracted to leaders, period. You have to change your mindset in order to attract followers. Think about this, who do poor people hang out with? Usually it's people just like them, because they all have the same poor person mentality. If you want to change your magnetism, you also have to change your associations. It's a very hard thing to do, believe me, I know. But is necessary.

6. You have to have the ability to work the system. Leaders are duplicable. For people to follow, you must have a system in place that anyone can do. If everyone cannot do what you are doing, then you will lose your followers. They will find someone else to follow who has a system that they can easily work.

7. The last quality is really 3 qualities wrapped into one. A leader has integrity, loyalty and an unquestioning mindset. You must know that what you are teaching your followers is fact. If it's not, and you find out that what you have been teaching needs to be changed, you must have the integrity to acknowledge that you were wrong. You have to be loyal to your followers or you will lose them.

In actuality, you are really both. You have to follow before you can lead. If you want to be a leader, you must first be a servant. That's what training and teaching is all about. I pride myself on the fact that I have become a leader in my industry. I also pride myself that some of the people who were followers are now leaders themselves. That only means that I am doing something right.
