The Purpose of Website Headlines
The most important part of the webpage is the headline. Most people would agree that this is true although some might argue for other aspects of the page to be considered equally important. I have a book that is written completely about the look and the graphics on the website as being the most important. This may be true for certain types of websites but for the vast majority of websites the headline is absolutely critical. So what is the main purpose of website headlines and why?
Your headline is usually the first thing a visitor sees
When you are looking for information you will be expecting to see something coming up on the page that is on the same topic as what you searched for in the search engine. So if I am looking for information about writing web pages I would expect the first thing I see on the page is a headline about writing web pages. The headline is the part of the page that should be telling the visitor that they have come to the right place. You have about 5 seconds to grab the readers attention before they will start to consider clicking away. So you must make sure that your headline is bang on topic and draws the reader to look down the page.
What is a well written headline?
When experts speak about a well written headline they are not saying that the language and grammar should be perfect. What they mean is that it should have words and phrases in them that help the visitor take the action you want them to. If you want them to read down the page your headline should impel the reader to do this. On the other hand, if you want them to watch an information video then this should be the focus of your headline. What you are doing is making sure the right visitors come to your page and you supply what they are looking for. To do this really well you need to understand keywords and how to use them.
The worst headline in the world
A bad headline will send your visitors away because it has no relevance to their search. Web searches are nearly always for information. So if your headline does not have the right information then you will not get them reading your page. The worst headline is any version of "Welcome to my website". This might sound all very nice but it has no relevance to information that is being looked for. You should be going for some along the lines of "The information you are looking for about baby clothes (Insert your topic) is here" If you can target your visitors well then a headline that solves someones search for information will keep them on your website. Once you have done this you can work on other aspects of your website to get them to stay there and do something.
