The Ups and Down of Work at Home
Those who work at home usually start out thinking it is a fun way to earn money, and later on are rudely awakened by the fact that it requires just as much if not more effort to steer it towards success. That would bring you to the question of what you should look out for when you go for the switch between a regular job and one you would do from home. If you ever played with riddles, you would know that almost always the correct answer is the most obvious. Therefore, the basic difference between work at home and a 9 to 5 job is just that - the place.
Do not for one moment be lured into thinking that working from your home would mean less work or more fun times. In fact, the effort would more often than not be more since you would always be tempted to take a nap, see the movie running on TV, have a chat on the phone with your friend, or eat a leisurely meal instead of working.
Choosing to work at home is a serious decision. Let us look at the downs of this choice. The first thing is that it needs your complete commitment, unlike your job which was your boss' or the management's "baby". You need to have time and physical space kept aside for it, and your family should be advised to allow you the time you have earmarked for it just as you would be in the office. This sounds simple enough, but it is in realty a mammoth task. You would find all types of emergencies cropping up exactly when you are warming up for work. Not answering the calls from your family would make you feel guilty, while the opposite would have a terrible effect on your work.
Then there is the worry about finances, which previously was not as dominant on your list of problems. You would need to get profit from what you are doing or your efforts would be in vain. For that matter, you would need to get organized, have a plan of action, goals, budget, time frame and so on. You would also need a good marketing strategy and a network in place, which you would have to build from scratch. This would require learning new skills, working long hours, and getting little in return initially.
In spite of all that, the picture is actually quite bright. This is because this type of work does give you some amazing benefits. You are always around your family, and that means they have warm meals, a shoulder to cry on when needed, a warm home, someone to talk to, and money in the bank. Spouses and children feel good when they come to a home where someone is waiting for them. Your presence at home would have you bond with your family over time, as it would have been the opposite while you would pursue your 9 to 5 job. This is one of the main reasons why people today choose work at home over regular jobs any day.
