Five Sure Ways to Ignite Creativity

How many times were you sitting at the office, staring at the blank screen and feeling completely blocked, not an idea at hand. If this scenario sounds familiar to you, don't worry - you are in good company. Creativity block is a common practice to anyone who has to be creative at work. Whether you work with letters and numbers all day or whether you sit in a studio and make art, the need to provide creative and unique work means that creativity is on your job description.

Unfortunately, today's busy life style is one of the main obstacles to creativity. The constant stress at work, the need to render instant results to a perpetual stream of new tasks and more responsibilities, coupled with the daily grind are all taking lead roles in blocking your creativity. The result is that at times you need your inner creative child the most, it is less likely to respond to your calls.

Still you must find a way to unleash your inner creative child exactly at these stressful times. Luckily there are a few tried and true ways to ignite your creativity even on bad days. This article will provide you the solution by describing the five most efficient methods of dealing with a creativity block.

Take a break. One of the great ways to get out of a creativity block is by eliminating its source. As stress and the daily grind are hindering your creativity, you need to remove them from your desk for the time being. The best way to push these creativity busters away is by taking a short break. Relax, make yourself a cup of coffee or tea, rest your eyes for a few minutes, or even better - take a short walk outdoors. After the short break go back to your desk and look afresh at the problem you need to tackle. Chances are the ideas will start flying. Don't dismiss this method because of the extra time it takes off your day. Sparking your creativity by taking a methodical break is a great time saver, as staring at the blank screen and not getting anywhere is much less efficient.

Get out of your comfort zone. This notion might sound counter intuitive. In times of need everyone tend to cling to the familiar. However familiar is not a great creativity boosters but quite to the contrary. What you need to do is to go to a place in your mind, where you have never been before. Go past your comfort zone and try a new and completely different approach. If time is an issue, and it often is, don't think too much and just do exactly the opposite of what you usually do in similar cases. Don't forget that the traditional way has not helped you thus far if you are currently blocked. You don't need to abandon your traditional ways completely, your past experience is an important tool in your tool box, but just for the time being, for this specific problem that you are working on - try something new. Your solution will become a new addition to your old tool box.

Make an outline. "The devil is in the details", how true is that idiom... Details might be very important for finding the perfect solution, but sometimes they should be used only for the finishing touches. A flood of information can distract or cast a shadow over the big picture and by that getting in your way to the solution. The best way to clarify the situation is by getting rid of all the details. Sketching or writing an outline of the main ideas is an easy way of doing so. This way you can focus on the solution, rather than focusing on the problems. Your thinking process would be clearer and more targeted. After completing the outline it will be really easy to develop the end result out of it by adding the relevant details.

Research. Even if you need to provide and innovative and unique solution, it doesn't mean you have to reinvent the wheel. Searching for existing solutions can inspire you to change your outlook on the problem. Looking at new angles of the same problem, new perspectives is very inspiring and can breed many new and original ideas.

Getting back to the planning board. Many times the creativity block grabs you farther along the way, when you are already deep inside your work and all of a sudden you lose your pace and shortly after feel lost. This is the time to go back and look at the problem again. Rethink about the solution and write down or map your thoughts in a stream of consciousness way. This is a great method for generating new ideas and an excellent tool for getting you out of a dead end solution you were entrenched in.
