Nothing wrong with working from home

Some people have a mindset that if I am working from my home I am not a very successful person. In this article I clarify that there is nothing wrong with working from home, in fact I am much more successful because I am able to work from my home.
We were travelling in a plane and the suit clad person sitting beside me introduced himself as working for xyz multinational company. Then he asked me what I do, I said that I run my own business from my home. His wrinkled face gave away what he thought, his sarcastic smile revealed that he thought I was a looser with no job.

He did not believe that it was possible to earn a good income sitting at home. I had to explain to him that I had exchanged my well paying job for the freedom of being my own boss. My income now was much more than what it was before I quit my job, and I was putting in much less effort and experiencing a much greater satisfaction.

Not o­nly can I work from home, I can work from anywhere. I can travel anywhere and still continue my work. I can carry my office with me to any place I go ! My office is just my laptop computer you know. I set my own hours of work and there is no pressure or stress. I choose what I want to accomplish and I decide how and when I will accomplish it.  

Most people have a mindset of doing the grind from 9 to 5, that is if they are lucky enough to be able to stop at 5 ! They are so used to running o­n the corporate treadmill that they cannot imagine any other mode of existence. The o­nly way ahead they see is by getting a promotion or moving to a higher paying company.

Usually when someone asks me what I do, I reply that I have my own business. Invariably the next question is how many employees I have and what is my companies name ! I have to tell them that, well there is no company really, I am the o­nly person managing the show. They have no clue how it could be possible for a single person to run a business using the power of the internet to automate all aspects of the business.

Before I quit my job, when I would introduce myself to anyone saying I work for abc company, they would be much impressed, thinking that I am very successful and I would have their full attention and admiration for the rest of the conversation. Now, when I tell people that I "work from home" they would assume that I am o­n the fist rung o­n the ladder to success and either ignore me altogether or would be so amused that they would talk about nothing other than my home business! I am like a voice in their dream that is showing them undreamed of possibilities! They would ignore me if they want to remain sleeping, or they would be curious enough about it to be entertained by it. A few of my friends have started their own part time internet business with the hope that some day they too will be able to quit their jobs and be free to work from home, or work from any where they choose.

Though working at home has its benefits, I would not recommend it for everyone. It requires discipline and ability to chase your goal by making a plan and following it. When you work a job, your salary is fixed and your boss is there to give you clear instructions about what you need to do. Just as everyone cannot be a entrepreneur, working at home does not suit everyone.  

Technology today has made it possible even for corporate companies to allow their employees to work from home. The internet connects everything, we have o­nly seen the beginning of a new breed of internet technology that has the power to revolutionise the way we conduct our lives. Thanks to the internet, today millions of people like me are able to work from home. That day will soon come when it will be common for people to work at home full time. Not o­nly will people realise that there is nothing wrong with working from home, but they will admire and respect the lifestyle choice that people make when they choose to work from home.
