List Building During the Start Up Phase  

Although list building is important throughout the time you operate your business, it is equally if not more important during the start up phase. After all, you cannot begin operations until you have customers, and the best way to create a good customer base with which to start is to start list building before you are ready to start operating your business. You cannot operate a business without customers so being able to acquire a list before hand will save time when you are ready to promote your business. You also want to allow enough time, but not too much time, so that your promotional efforts coincide with the opening of your website.

During your start up phase, you may not have as many names on your list as you will later when you increase your list building efforts. During the start up phase, you just want to gather enough names to allow you to develop a good database of customers. How many you need initially depends what you have to offer and how much time you have to devote to this phase of your business start-up. You do not want to spend so much time on list building that you exhaust all of your sources for future lists. By allowing minimal efforts from each source, you can have assurances of more names later. Because this is a consistent process, it is important to maintain a constant flow of names rather than attempting to add many names at one time.
